As I was watching the Godfather II for the 100th time, there's this one scene that people might have not noticed. I went into Reddit and YouTube to see if anyone else is talking about it, and there is none so I feel like I have to share it here.
We all know that in the film, Michael survived a failed assassination attempt. The plot then follows Michael making Tom Hagen the temporary Don while he attends to business matters in Cuba and finding out who the traitor was in the family. While he's aware that any of his associates might be the traitor (he mentioned earlier in the film that all their people are "businessmen" and that is where their loyalty is placed), he highly suspects that Roth and Ola orchestrated the hit with Fredo being a "third party."
As the film progressed, Michael attends a festival together with his brother Fredo and Johnny Ola, whom Fredo claims he never met. As the party goes on, a drunk Fredo then accidentally reveals he knew Johnny Ola all along, confirming Michael's suspicion that Fredo was involved in the hit. At the moment Fredo reveals that he knew who Johnny Ola was, and the camera cuts to Michael, you can hear Senator Geary saying, "I see it, and I still don't believe it," in the background. The ambient dialogue perfectly captures Michael's disbelief that his brother was part of the hit. Such a brilliantly done scene.
I feel like I have to write a short blog post about it. Well done, Francis Ford Coppola.
Here's a video clip showing the scene I'm talking about:
